Underground there's an entire civilization built by worms — tunnels, galleries, and highways for water and air. Here's how they do it.

Every time you walk across a lawn or a garden, you're walking over an incredible underground network built by billions of worms. It's basically a city down there — and worms are the engineers.

How a Worm Digs

Worms don't have teeth or claws to dig with. Instead, they use two systems:

  • Eating through it: They literally eat the soil as they move forward, extracting nutrients and pooping out the rest behind them.
  • Pushing through it: They use their circular and longitudinal muscles to squeeze their body thin, push forward, then expand to anchor and pull the rest of their body along.
💡 Did You Know? A single worm can move up to 2 meters of soil per year. With millions of worms in healthy soil, that's an enormous amount of mixing and aeration happening constantly.

Why Tunnels Matter So Much

Without worm tunnels, soil becomes compacted — think of a brick. Water can't drain, roots can't grow, and air can't get in. Worm tunnels solve all three problems at once:

  • 🌊 Water drainage: Tunnels act like little pipes, moving water down to where roots need it
  • 💨 Air pockets: Roots need oxygen just like we do — tunnels deliver it
  • 🌱 Root highways: Plant roots actually follow worm tunnels because the path of least resistance is already there

Nightcrawlers Go Extra Deep

While some worms stay in the top 6 inches of soil, nightcrawlers can go 6 feet deep or more. They bring nutrients from the surface all the way down and bring minerals from deep soil all the way up. They're basically a free vertical mixing machine.

What We Saw When We Dug Up Our Farm Beds

After six months of adding worm castings to our garden beds, we dug a test hole. The difference was unreal — the soil was loose, dark, and full of air pockets. You could push your hand in almost a foot with no resistance. Before? It was like pushing through clay. Worm tunnels did that. For free.
