Read More →If you ask us, nightcrawlers are the most underrated animals on the planet. They don't roar, they don't fly, and they definitely don't look cool in photos — but without them, your garden would be a total disaster. We found this out the hard way when we started BuBi Worms, and it completely blew our minds.
What Makes a Nightcrawler So Special?
Nightcrawlers (Lumbricus terrestris — that's the science name, we had to look it up) are the big worms you see on the sidewalk after rain. They can grow up to 14 inches long and live deep underground during the day. At night, they come up to eat and explore — which is how they got their name.
💡 Did You Know? A single acre of healthy soil can contain more than one million earthworms. That means they outweigh all the cows on the same acre!
Their 3 Superpowers
- 🏗️ Tunnel Builders: Worms dig tunnels that let air and water reach plant roots. No tunnels = roots can't breathe = dead plants.
- 💩 Poop Factories (in a good way): Worm castings (their poop) are packed with nutrients that plants love. Scientists call it "black gold."
- ♻️ Decomposers: They eat dead leaves and break them down into food for the soil. They're basically nature's recycling crew.
Why Fishermen Love Them
Nightcrawlers move really naturally in the water — they wiggle and squirm, which fish can't resist. Bass, catfish, trout, and bluegill all go crazy for a fresh nightcrawler. Fake lures try to copy that wiggle, but nothing beats the real thing.
What We Learned at BuBi Worms
When we started our farm, we had to learn what makes worms healthy and happy. Turns out they need moisture, the right temperature (55–77°F is the sweet spot), food scraps, and darkness. Get those four things right and your worms will thrive — and so will everything that depends on them.
