🍽️ What Does a Worm Eat? (Spoiler: Not What You Think)

✍️ Burak & Bilal — BuBi Worms Co.📅 4 min read

Dirt? Leaves? Pizza crusts? We tested what our worms go crazy for — and the results were genuinely surprising.

When we first started BuBi Worms, we thought worms just ate dirt. Turns out we were only half right — and learning what worms actually eat totally changed how we run our farm.

The Truth About Worm Diets

Worms eat organic matter — things that were once alive. They pull decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and bacteria-covered particles into their mouths (which is that tiny opening at the very front of their body) and run it through their digestive system.

💡 Did You Know? Worms don't actually eat the food directly. First, bacteria break it down slightly, then the worm eats the bacteria-covered particles. Worms are farming bacteria — just like we're farming worms!

What We Feed Our Worms at BuBi Worms

  • 🥕 Vegetable scraps — carrot peels, lettuce, zucchini (favorites!)
  • Coffee grounds — worms go absolutely wild for these
  • 🍌 Banana peels — high in potassium, very popular
  • 📰 Shredded cardboard — provides carbon balance
  • 🍂 Dead leaves — classic worm food

What You Should NEVER Feed Worms

  • ❌ Meat or fish — attracts pests and smells terrible
  • ❌ Citrus peels — too acidic, can kill worms
  • ❌ Onions and garlic — worms hate the smell
  • ❌ Dairy products — same problem as meat
  • ❌ Salty or spicy food — dehydrates them

The Funny Experiment We Did

Burak once put a tiny piece of pizza crust in with our worms to see what would happen. Three days later: gone. The worms went for the crust before the fresh banana peel. We now know worms have surprisingly good taste.

How Much Should You Feed?

A good rule: feed your worms about half their body weight per day. Our main bin has about 2 pounds of worms, so we add about 1 pound of scraps every day or two. Don't overfeed — leftover rotting food causes bad smells and fruit flies.
