💧 How to Keep Your Worms Alive All Day at the Lake

Nothing worse than opening your bait container and finding a pile of dead worms. Here's exactly how we keep ours wiggling from sunrise to sunset.

We've had this happen more times than we'd like to admit: drive an hour to the lake, open the worm container, and find limp, dead worms. After lots of trial and error, we figured out the perfect system.

The #1 Killer: Heat

Nightcrawlers need to stay cool — ideally between 50–65°F. In Texas, that means your biggest enemy is the car dashboard, direct sunlight, and hot pavement. A container left in the sun for 20 minutes on a summer day = dead worms.

Our Proven Worm Survival System

Step 1: Use the Right Container

A foam container (like a styrofoam cup or proper bait box) insulates much better than plastic. The foam keeps temperature stable for hours. If you can find one with a lid that has small holes — perfect.

Step 2: Bedding Material

Fill the container with moist (not wet) bedding. Our favorites:

Damp newspaper strips
Peat moss (slightly moistened)
Coconut coir

The bedding should feel like a wrung-out sponge — damp but not dripping.

💡 Did You Know? Worms breathe through their skin. If the bedding is too dry, they suffocate. If it's too wet, they drown. The "wrung-out sponge" rule is the key to keeping them alive.

Step 3: Cooling Strategy

Add a few small ice cubes wrapped in a paper towel to the corner of the container
Store your bait in the coolest part of the cooler (under the ice, not next to the hot drinks)
Never leave bait in a hot car — bring it to the shade with you

Step 4: At the Water's Edge

Dip the closed container in the lake water for a few seconds every hour. The cool water temperature lowers the container temperature naturally. Worms will stay fresh all day.
