⏰ Best Times to Go Fishing in Texas (And What Worms to Use)

Timing is everything in fishing. We learned from dad and from YouTube — here's the breakdown of when fish are most active in Texas.

Texas fishing is amazing year-round, but there are definitely windows where the fish are practically jumping into your bucket. After two years of fishing every chance we get, here's what we've figured out about timing.

The Golden Hours

No matter what season, the best fishing times in Texas are:

🌅 Early morning (6–9 AM): Fish are most active as water temperatures rise. Bass and catfish are especially aggressive.
🌇 Late afternoon/evening (4–7 PM): Second feeding window as temperatures drop. Great for larger fish.
🌙 Night fishing: Catfish in particular are very active after dark, especially in summer.

💡 Did You Know? Fish are cold-blooded, so their metabolism speeds up when water is warmer. In Texas summer, fish feed aggressively in the morning before the water gets too hot.

Season by Season Guide

🌸 Spring (March–May) — THE BEST SEASON

This is our absolute favorite time. Bass are spawning near shallow banks, catfish are active, and the water temperature is perfect (around 60–75°F). Use nightcrawlers near the bank edges. You will catch fish.

☀️ Summer (June–August)

Fish deep and fish early. By 10 AM, the Texas sun has pushed fish into deeper, cooler water. Target 8–15 feet with your nightcrawler. Dawn fishing in summer is incredible.

🍂 Fall (September–November)

Second great season. Fish are feeding heavily to prepare for winter. Water cools down, fish come back to shallower water. Bass fishing is especially good in October.

❄️ Winter (December–February)

Slow down your presentation. Fish are sluggish in cold water. Use a small piece of nightcrawler (not the whole worm) and fish very slowly near the bottom.
