Read More →Last summer, our tomato plants grew so tall and produced so many tomatoes that our neighbor came over to look at what we were using. He couldn't believe it was just worm castings. Here's our exact process.
The Setup
We planted four Roma tomato seedlings in raised beds. Two beds got our standard soil mix. Two beds got soil mixed with 30% worm castings. Same seeds, same water, same sunlight. Pure experiment.
Week by Week Results
- Week 1–2: No visible difference in seedling size
- Week 3–4: Casting beds were noticeably darker green
- Week 5–6: Casting bed plants were 30% taller
- Week 8: First flowers appeared — 2 weeks earlier than control beds
- Week 12: First tomatoes! Casting bed plants had 3× more tomatoes forming
💡 Did You Know? The beneficial microbes in worm castings actually protect plants from certain diseases and pests. Our casting-bed tomatoes had zero signs of blight while the control beds showed some spotting.
The Secret Mid-Season Boost
About 8 weeks in, we made worm casting "tea" — we soaked a cup of castings in a gallon of water for 24 hours, then watered the casting-bed plants with it. The plants seemed to explode after that. New growth, more flowers, bigger fruit.
Final Harvest Numbers
- 🍅 Control beds (no castings): 22 tomatoes, average weight 4 oz
- 🍅🍅 Casting beds: 67 tomatoes, average weight 6.5 oz
We gave our neighbor a bag of our castings. His garden looks better than ours now. We're going to need to step up our game for this summer.
